Storage and Packaging of DMSO

Request A Sample

DMSO is chemically stable and low in acute toxicity, but its physical properties set storage and packaging requirements. It freezes at 18.5 °C, is strongly hygroscopic, penetrates the skin, and is incompatible with carbon steel and copper alloys. These properties decide the correct container, warehouse conditions, and transfer hardware.

Container and Material Compatibility

Material Compatibility Typical use
HDPE Excellent 25 L carboys, 200 L drums, IBCs
316L stainless steel Excellent Tank trucks, process vessels
Borosilicate glass Excellent Laboratory and electronic grade
PTFE / PFA-lined Excellent Electronic, metal-ion-sensitive service
Carbon steel Poor (corrosion) Not recommended
Copper / brass / bronze Poor (stress corrosion) Not recommended
Natural rubber Poor (swelling) Use Viton, EPDM, or PTFE gaskets

Table 1: DMSO material compatibility and typical packaging applications

DMSO is compatible with most plastics and austenitic stainless steels, but it corrodes carbon steel and causes stress-corrosion cracking in copper alloys. Gaskets and seals should be Viton, EPDM, or PTFE rather than natural rubber, which DMSO swells rapidly. Pump wetted parts and piping for transfer should be 316L stainless or PTFE-lined.

Properties That Drive Warehouse Decisions

DMSO solidifies at 18.5 °C, so in cool warehouses or winter transport it must be warmed gently to 25–30 °C before pumping, with prolonged heating above 50 °C avoided. Its 189 °C boiling point makes it non-volatile at room temperature, which simplifies headspace control but means solvent removal from products is slow. With a 95 °C flash point it is combustible rather than highly flammable.

Most importantly, DMSO is strongly hygroscopic: an open container can exceed the typical 0.1% water specification within days in humid air. Because it carries dissolved substances across the skin barrier, any material dissolved in it must be treated as a potential dermal exposure rather than as pure solvent.

Storage Conditions and Shelf Life

DMSO should be held in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse at 15–30 °C, away from direct sunlight, strong oxidizers, and strong acids. Containers remain tightly sealed to prevent moisture uptake, and for pharmaceutical and electronic grades a dry nitrogen or argon headspace blanket is recommended after partial dispensing.

When sealed in the original container, DMSO has a typical shelf life of 24–36 months; the main quality risk after repeated opening is water uptake, checked by Karl Fischer analysis. Piping is trace-heated at 25–35 °C to prevent re-solidification, and glove selection in the plant uses nitrile or butyl rubber rather than latex, which offers poor protection. If a DMSO solution carries pesticides, drugs, or heavy-metal salts, the mixture is treated as a dermal hazard.
