DMSO is sold in industrial, pharmaceutical, and electronic grades defined by assay, water, trace metals, and dimethyl sulfide. The grade purchased decides whether a precious-metal catalyst survives, an API passes release, or a wafer stays defect-free. Buying above need raises cost; buying below it fails the process.

The controlling parameter shifts by application. Water matters most for reaction stoichiometry, trace metals for catalyst poisoning and semiconductor defects, and dimethyl sulfide content for odor-sensitive work and downstream sulfur carryover.
Where Each Grade Is Used
Industrial grade is the lowest-cost material, suited to reactions where the product is later isolated by crystallization or distillation and the solvent and its impurities are left behind. It covers SNAr, SN2, and Halex chemistry in agrochemical intermediates and the wet spinning of polyacrylonitrile for carbon fiber.
Pharmaceutical grade meets USP <679> and European Pharmacopoeia 0429 under GMP. It appears in nucleophilic substitution, oxidation, fluorination, and coupling steps of small-molecule APIs, in amorphous solid dispersions, and at 5–10% as a cryoprotectant in cell therapy. Under ICH Q3C it is a Class 3 solvent with a 50 mg/day permitted daily exposure.
Electronic grade is made and packaged under cleanroom conditions. It is the high-solvency backbone of copper-compatible post-etch residue removers and a solvent component of photoresist and anti-reflective coatings. Individual metal ions must stay below 10 ppb, and below 1 ppb at advanced nodes, because they cause device defects and gate-oxide breakdown.
Which Grade to Buy
The choice follows where DMSO touches the product. A drug substance or drug product requires pharmaceutical grade. A reaction using a precious-metal catalyst, or one where water is critical such as organometallic chemistry, calls for pharmaceutical or better even if the product is not a medicine.
A semiconductor or electronic material demands electronic grade, while a high-volume product isolated by distillation can run on industrial grade to control cost. The penalty for mismatch is concrete: under-spec material poisons a catalyst or fails a regulatory release, while over-spec material simply inflates the purchase price with no process benefit.
