DMSO Grades Explained: Electronic vs Pharmaceutical vs Industrial

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a highly polar, aprotic solvent valued for its powerful solvency, low toxicity and miscibility with water and most organic solvents. But not all DMSO is the same — choosing the wrong grade can affect product quality, regulatory acceptance and even safety.

The three standard DMSO grades

1. Electronic grade (Type I, purity ≥ 99.98%)

The cleanest grade, with tightly controlled metal ions, particulates and moisture. It is used in semiconductor cleaning, electronic-component manufacturing and other processes where trace contamination is unacceptable.

2. Pharmaceutical grade (Type II, purity ≥ 99.96%)

Manufactured under stricter process control for API synthesis, drug-delivery systems and biotech applications where consistent purity and documentation (COA, traceability) are required.

3. Industrial grade (Type III, purity ≥ 99.90%)

A cost-effective grade for polymer and carbon-fiber production, fine-chemical synthesis, extraction and general industrial applications that do not require electronic-level cleanliness.

How to choose the right grade

  • Semiconductor / electronics: always specify electronic grade and agree on metal-ion and particle limits.
  • Pharma / biotech: use pharmaceutical grade and request batch COAs.
  • Polymers, carbon fiber, general synthesis: industrial grade usually offers the best value.

Why grade separation matters
